Senator Sanders is strongly opposed to the proposed Constitution Pipeline that would carry fracked gas 124 miles from the Marcellus Shale fields of Pennsylvania to a compressor station in Wright, New York.
Senator Sanders strongly opposes fracking. We cannot, we should not and we must not allow our children to be poisoned by toxic drinking water just so a handful of fossil fuel companies can rake in even more profits.
Our job is to break our addiction to fossil fuels, not increase our dependence on energy sources that pollute our planet. The possibility of methane leaks from the proposed Constitution Pipeline would be catastrophic to our air and our climate — and if this pipeline were approved, eminent domain would be used to seize land from farmers and homeowners. That would be unacceptable.
Gov. Cuomo and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation should use their power under the Clean Water Act to reject this pipeline. We need to move to a 100 percent clean energy economy. Building more risky pipelines that encourage the production of dirty fossil fuels is not the path forward.
