Sanders Statement on Kansas Special Election Results

BURLINGTON, Vt. – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders issued the following statement Wednesday congratulating James Thompson for his strong campaign in the heavily conservative Kansas 4th congressional district:

“I want to congratulate James Thompson and the progressive community in Kansas for running a great campaign in the 4th congressional district. Nobody likes to lose a close election but, in a congressional district that Donald Trump won by 27 points last fall, James lost by just seven points last night. That’s an incredibly impressive showing. It is a showing that makes the entire country understand that grassroots America is beginning to stand up and fight back against the 1 percent – and that the momentum is with us.

“The election results last night show that in Kansas, and I believe around the country, people are catching on to the fact that during his campaign Donald Trump told the American people that he would fight for working people, but that as president he is doing exactly the opposite. You are not fighting for working people, President Trump, when you support legislation that throws 24 million Americans off of health insurance, cuts Medicaid by over $800 billion and raises premiums substantially for older workers. You’re not fighting for working people when you propose massive tax breaks for billionaires and then cut back on education, nutrition, housing and childcare. You’re not fighting for working people when you appoint more billionaires and Wall Street executives than any administration in American history.

“Progressives in Kansas lost the battle last night for a seat in Congress, but their overall efforts are helping us win the war to transform the Democratic Party and our nation. Once again, congratulations to James Thompson and the progressive community in Kansas for an historic campaign.”
